We drove south from Havasu through Parker and into Phoenix for a couple of days. Visited our friends at Bivouac Trailer… where we got a couple of quick upgrades (it’s a great company and we’re still VERY happy with our purchase), and then we headed down to Tucson where we caught up with our old friend Peter, who we met in the Verde Valley last year. We camped for a few days at a really neat little Forest Service campground called Molino Basin in the Mt Lemon recreation area. It’s up at around 3,500 feet so it’s noticeably cooler than the baking desert floor.
At the end of the same road just past some skiing you’ll find summervale… a small town at over 8,000 feet in elevation, with a small general store that sells what’s purported to be very good fudge (we didn’t have any), and a small, pretty decent pizzeria that sells ENORMOUS… as in full plate sized… yummy cookies (we ate both the pizza and a cookie… all right two cookies). WARNING: The pizzeria shuts the oven down at 4:30 and it takes close to an hour to get up there – nothing worse than making the drive and getting shut out.
We did a couple of snow hikes. Had one massive snowball fight. Explored the waterfalls that were near our camp and hiked to a former Japanese internment camp… where we sat and discussed the differences between rights (what most of us think we have) and privileges (what we really have) and whether history is contemplating repeating itself… if you catch my drift. There’s also what looks to be really good mtn biking in the area… but since my horse was recently stolen I’m trying not to notice. And all of this fun is less than thirty minutes away from the conveniences of Tucson.
