We spent the holidays in San Luis Obispo with our friends and family. Food, beach, pong, more food, checkers, scategories, more food… it really was great seeing everyone. And since we’re headed south from here… as in south of the border… the topic of safety and security came up A LOT. We heard the horror stories, got the warnings, and it really seemed to frustrate some when I didn’t immediately jump up to change our travel plans.

Where did we get this notion that we’re supposed to be secure? Life is insecure… and it ALWAYS ends badly. So… I don’t look for security. For sure I have that same little voice in my head that you do. The one that get’s me all tense and wound up. That tells me that when HE doesn’t know what’s next… that’s no bueno for us. But… truth be told… I don’t like him… and he’s been wrong so often that even if I did like him I wouldn’t trust him… and then there’s the fact that I really, really enjoy proving him wrong.

Every now and again we talk and he shares his frustrations with me. He explains that he’s just trying to keep us safe… and alive and he tries to get me to admit that it makes little sense to leave something that’s comfortable and known to head into the potentially uncomfortable and certainly unknown. I get it… but it’s ultimately… well… booooooring. I’m pretty sure he’s the byproduct of some hundreds of thousands of years of evolution… so he’s got some data behind him… and I’m sure that many of his former owners who didn’t listen to him didn’t do too well. I get all that too… but it seems pretty silly… to me anyway… to be sitting on a rock that’s hurtling through space at unimaginable speeds thinking that we’re secure in any way.

The bottom line for me is that life’s either a daring adventure… or I’m not interested. I know it’s gotta end at some point and I’m far more interested in having the life I want than I am in stretching out the one I don’t… and I think that’s a great lesson for our children too.
